The 3* Royal Sportsman is Porthmadog's premier hotel and is
a full service hotel and is considered to be one of the very best within its rating
in Snowdonia with an AA Rosette for its food. It commands a central position in
Porthmadog, sited at the western end of the high street. In August 2010, the hotel's
restaurant - Peppino's - was included in 'The Good Food Guide' based on readers'
recommendations and inspection reports. Peppino's is an Italian name, which reflects
atmosphere, the way customers are looked after and style of cooking. In Gelert's
Bar, you can sample award winning Purple Moose real ales brewed in Porthmadog
or a wide selection of wines or cocktails, whereas in the coffee lounge, you can
enjoy our fair trade coffee. The hotel has been extensively refurbished in a new
house style and the bedrooms upgraded with new pastel colours; this was completed
in April 2010. There are both small/standard and larger superior rooms to suit
all sizes and pockets, all warm comfortable and exceptionally clean. All rooms
have extremely comfortable King Koil Club Class divan beds with luxury pillows
made in Ireland, duvets made in Scotland and starched cotton sheets and pillow
cases. There is also free and unlimited WIFi throughout, free covered parking,
and a drying room with storage area for golf clubs and cycles.
Royal St. David's, #2 in Wales, is a challenging test in a
breathtaking setting, always dominated by the brooding presence of Harlech Castle.
Almost every hole changes direction, which also changes the effect of the
wind among the gorse-covered dunes. It is noted for a succession of long testing
par 4 holes and 5 short holes, which vary in length and direction. A feature
is the large size of the greens. The last 5 holes form a loop through the dunes
that provides 'a finish the equal of any. The club regularly hosts National and
International tournaments. 6,629 yards Par 69 - Links.
Nefyn Golf Club is a unique 26-hole championship clifftop
golf course, set on a breathtaking peninsula where the sea is visible from just
about every spot. There are 10 front holes and 8 on the back with an alternative
eight holes that can be played on the now world-famous 'Point'. This is a narrow
peninsula with the holes bounded on one side by secluded coves, rocky outcrops
and the sea and on the other by a glorious stretch of sandy beach and a pub. There
is a backdrop of the Snowdonia range to the east and, on a clear sunny evening
the Wicklow mountain in Ireland to the west. Day passes at Nefyn will allow
you to play all 26 holes on the property. 6548 yards, Par 71 - Clifftop.
Porthmadog Golf Club is near Portmeirion the famous Italianate
village by Clough Williams Ellis. The golf course is an equally captivating mixture
of heathland and linksland, The front nine are away from the coast, the soil is
sandy but the terrain is heathland with the presence of water makes itself felt
on five of the holes. The back nine head for the sea, and some beautiful scenery,
and the course is transformed into pure links that have been likened to a miniature
Troon. The clifftop 13th green is a scenic delight and the 14th 'Himalayas' is
a 378-yards par four that demands you drive over a huge natural bunker hiding
the fairway from tee, wonderful golf. 6287 yards Pr 71 - Links / Heathland.
Pwllheli Golf Course is on the south coast of the Lleyn Peninsula
with views of Snowdonia over Cardigan Bay. Uniquely Pwllheli
has both naturally undulating links and parkland holes with lush tree
lined fairways, it's quite a mesmerising combination and the greens are excellent. Not
a long course but with the absence of par 5's and some of the par 4's playing
in to the prevailing south westerly winds it is a true test of golf. At 197 yards
with the beach to the left and a cavernous bunker short of the right front
of the green the 10th is typical of some of the memorable holes to be found on
the course. 6108 yards, Par 69 - Links and Parkland.
